Landmarks

Christchurch has many beautiful landmarks, here are some of the main ones

Cathedral Square

In the centre of the city is the Anglican Cathedral built in 1864,  which is a fine example of a Gothic building and many interesting features inside. There is a market in the square on Thursdays and Fridays. Listen to Wizard give his views of the world in Speakers Corner. It is a short walk from there to Oxford Tce (locally known as the Strip).

Oxford Terrace

A line of restaurants with outdoor dining overlooking the picturesque Avon River. A great place for lunch or dinner with a continental atmosphere. It is the premier nightlife centre of Christchurch, with dancing, and a lively party atmosphere.

 

Christchurch Gondola

Drive to Heathcote Valley to take the gondola up to the top of the Port Hills for a magnificent view of the city and the Southern Alps. You can even have a meal in the restaurant at the top.

 

The Arts Centre

This was originally the Christchurch University and has utilized by artists and craftsman of the area where they can be seen at work. There is a wide variety of wonderful ceramics, artwork, clothes, and much more. The perfect place to unusual presents and souvenirs all made in New Zealand. There are several nearby restaurants and ethnic food vendors. Allow plenty of time to visit.

Hagley Park and Botanic Gardens

Close to the Arts Centre is the museum and the 400 acre Hagley Park in the centre of town. In the Spring a row of cherry trees covered in blossom line one side, on the other side of Harper Ave there is a mass of bluebells and daffodils. Within the park is the 75 acre Botanic Gardens with spectacular displays of exotic and native plants. The best view is from a punt down the River Avon.

Cashel Mall and Colombo St

Colombo St is Christchurch's main street running through the centre of town and is busy both day and night. These streets have a wide variety of shops, cafes, restaurants and numerous nightclubs and bars. Cashel Mall leads down to the Bridge Of Remembrance and Oxford Tce.

Victoria Square

Wonder through Victoria Square admiring the flowers, fountains and floral clock. Located between Colombo St and Armagh St.

New Regent St

Picturesque New Regent St has an interesting architecture in pastel colours. Dine al fresco and then explore the diverse  range of shops. The tram stops here for a tour of the city.
